Clean Water, Energy Priorities in Environmental Budget Request (2006-02-06). President Bush’s budget for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reflects his twin commitments to the War on Terror and development of more efficient energy technologies. The EPA released a summary of 2007 budget priorities February 6. The proposals would devote $184 million to security activities within the realm of the environmental agency, such as protection of drinking water supplies from terrorist attack, and environmental decontamination. In the pursuit of more efficient energy technologies, the administration proposed to boost diesel fuel emissions reductions efforts by $50 million with activities to support cleaner fuels and to replace older diesel equipment with technologies that emit less pollutants. more | read our dossier

Ben Bernanke, new chairman of the Federal Reserve

Ben Bernanke Takes Oath as Chairman of Federal Reserve Board (2006-02-06). Ben Bernanke was sworn in as 14th chairman of the Federal Reserve February 6 at a ceremony attended by President Bush. In remarks to the assembly at the Federal Reserve, Bush congratulated the new chairman and lauded his credentials. He said that economists and leaders across the political spectrum “praised [Bernanke] for his unsurpassed academic credentials, broad policy experience and a reputation for consensus-building.”  more
