Europe Matthew Rhodes, a professor of
national security studies at the College of International and
Security Studies at the George C. Marshall European Center for
Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, answered
questions in a January 19 USINFO webchat on key issues in
Southeast Europe for 2007.
Projected Future Status of Kosovo “Resolving Kosovo's future status in a way
that also brings Serbia and Montenegro fully into the community
of democratic nations is an administration priority that will
allow us to advance our goals for the entire region, and put the
legacy of the bloody break-up of Yugoslavia firmly in the past,”
says Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas R.
Burns."Win the Peace" in Balkans, Settle Kosovo Status, U.S. Urges
The U.S. view on Balkan's War Criminals “There is no possibility of a normal relationship
between the United States and either Bosnia and Herzegovina or Serbia and
Montenegro while the major war criminals – Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic –
are still at large", says Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs
Nicholas R. Burns.
The U.S. and the EU
share the goal of progressively integrating the Balkan countries into the
Euro-Atlantic structures, as reaffirmed at the 2004 NATO summit in Istanbul. The
values of democracy, the rule of law, respect for human and minority rights, and
a market economy constitute the foundations of the Euro-Atlantic community. The
pace of integration lies in the hands of the countries of the region."
