Pension Reform and Reform of Social Protection Programs in the United State

<itunes:author>American Center, US Embassy Brussels</itunes:author>

On April 18 Dr. Robert Rich Professor of Law and Health Policy at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Il, gave a presentation on Pension Reform in the U.S. and Europe in the framework of the American Center s Forum Lecture Series. After describing the differences between the U.S. and European social welfare systems, Dr. Rich pointed to similar problems and challenges with regard to pension benefits. He showed that pension reform cannot be discussed without taking demographics, economics, finance, law, public opinion and ideology into account, adding that pension reform needs to be part of the overall social security discussion. He argued that policy options available both in the U.S. and Europe are far more comprehensive than simply privatization and have a lot to do with values.

Professor Nau was a senior staff member of the National Security Council in the White House during the Reagan administration, responsible for international economic affairs.
